Eligibility
UNFI knows benefits are essential. That’s why coverage is also available to your spouse and children.
Associates
Non-Union Associates
You are eligible for benefits the first of the month following 30 days of employment. The benefits you are eligible for are based on your expected average hours of service per week when you’re hired.
- Average 30+ hours per week: Full benefits package
- Average less than 30 hours per week: EAP and Calm
Union Associates
Benefits eligibility for union-represented associates may differ across work groups based on the terms of a collective bargaining agreement. Refer to the eligibility rules for your work group.
Requalifying For Benefits Eligibility
Associates requalify for benefits eligibility once per year. This simplifies the enrollment process and, if you qualify for coverage, allows you to keep your coverage in place for an entire year at a time (as long as you remain eligible).
Benefits eligibility for current associates will be determined by hours of service during a defined 12-month period. An associate must be employed during the entire 12-month period to be included in the requalification determination.
Requalification for 2028 benefits.
Benefits eligibility for 2028 will be based on hours worked from October 4, 2026 – October 2, 2027.

Eligible Dependents
In general, eligible dependents include your:
- Spouse
- Domestic partner, same-sex or different-sex, who meets specified eligibility requirements. Depending on your individual situation, your domestic partner may qualify as either a tax-dependent or a non-tax dependent
- Children under age 26, including:
- biological or legally adopted children
- child placed with you for adoption
- stepchildren
- child for whom you have legal custody
- foster children living with you (not eligible under all plans)
- domestic partner’s children (must qualify as your tax dependent)
If you have an adult dependent child age 26 or over who is physically or mentally incapable of self-support, they may still be eligible for coverage, provided certain conditions are met.
Dependent Verification
When you enroll dependents in the medical, dental and/or vision programs for the first time, you must provide documentation verifying your dependents’ eligibility.
Important: If you’re adding dependents to your coverage, you’ll need to provide documentation that verifies they are eligible to participate. If you don’t submit the necessary documentation by the required date, your dependents will not have coverage.
Certify your spouse’s medical coverage.
If your spouse does not have access to other employer medical coverage, or has enrolled in their employer’s plan, complete the spousal surcharge certification to avoid the default surcharge.
