Health Savings Account

The Health Savings Account (HSA) is a smart way to save and pay for your health care expenses now or in the future. Optum Bank administers the HSA.

Eligibility

You are eligible for an HSA if you are enrolled in the HDHP w/ HSA or HDHP Basic medical plan options.

Important: You are not eligible if you are covered by Medicare or other health insurance that is not a high-deductible plan, including coverage under your spouse/domestic partner’s medical plan.

Contributions

Annual Limit

Per IRS limits, the maximum you can contribute to an HSA in 2027 is $4,500 for Associate-Only and $9,000 for Other Coverage Levels. If you are age 55 by the end of 2027, you can contribute an additional $1,000.

Associate Contributions

You decide how much you want to contribute on a pre-tax basis, up to the IRS annual contribution limit. Contributions are taken from your paycheck. If you are enrolled in the HDHP w/ HSA plan, be sure to factor in UNFI’s contribution.

How It Works

Optum Bank will send you a debit card that you can use to pay for eligible expenses, as long as you have funds available. Or, you can pay out of your own pocket and request reimbursement later. Use Optum Bank’s mobile app or secure portal to send payments directly to your provider.

Eligible Expenses

Most medical, prescription drug, dental and vision expenses, including but not limited to deductibles and prescriptions. IRS Pub. 502 has a complete list of eligible and ineligible expenses.

Features

Tax Advantages

The HSA features triple-tax advantages: Your dollars go into the account tax-free, grow tax-free and can be used tax-free!

Coordination with the Limited Purpose Flexible Spending Account

If you enroll in the HDHP w/ HSA or HDHP Basic option, you are eligible for a Limited Purpose Health Care FSA. That means you can only use the FSA to pay for eligible dental and vision expenses.

Unused Funds Carryover

Any unused contributions – from you or UNFI – roll over and stay in your account for future health care expenses.

Designate a Beneficiary

A beneficiary is a person, trust or estate receiving payouts from your life insurance, retirement accounts and other plans upon your death. Go to Optum Bank to review and update your beneficiary.

Portability – When You Leave UNFI

Your HSA dollars are always yours! You can use your account to pay for current and future health care expenses, even in retirement.
